“Download the self-hosted version of ONLYOFFICE Docs 8.2:”
I’m not sure what “self-hosted” means.
Does it just refer to the non-cloud version of OnlyOffice – the one where documents, etc. only get saved to local storage?
Thanks.

I believe this is just a description based on the fact, that ONLYOFFICE Docs is a web-based application. Therefore it has to be “hosted” on a machine (PC) and can then also be accessed and used from other PCs via web-browser, either from outside and/or inside a network-environment, depending on the configuration of the host/network … As in comparison to ONLYOFFICE Destktop installations.
Hello @mk7z
Firstly, Desktop Editors and Docs are different products even though both provide possibility to edit and view documents.
Generally, @bermuda is correct - Docs, a.k.a. Document Server, can be installed on your dedicated server for integration with your web-storage application to enhance it with capabilities that Docs provides. Basically, Desktop Editors allow you to edit files locally on your PC, whereas Docs provide possibility to edit documents online from the internet application via browser.
Thanks, I think the use of the same name (“Doc”) for two different document editing apps is confusing. Are all the features, other than the distinguishing ones you noted, the same?
In other words, if something is noted about Docs (the Document Server version), does it automatically also apply to the Document Editors version of Docs?
(I don’t think I am receiving notifications – for this and several other replies I just noticed when logging in. I did not change any settings from when I was receiving notifications.)
Let me clarify it even further:
Both apps (Document Server and Desktop Editors) have 4 main editors:
It depends on what you mean by “Document Editors”. Is it a reference to Desktop Editors application or Document editor that I’ve described above?
Thanks, I had somehow missed this reply. So would it be accurate to say that as far as ‘internal’ features go (document creation, editing, etc.), there is no differences between Desktop Editors ‘Docs’ and ‘Docs (Document Server)’ or ‘Docs Cloud’?
Not quite. Document Server does not create files in web application by itself, everything related to the document management depends on the storage, while Desktop Editor basically does not require DMS to be integrated with, so it can create files by itself.
There is no difference if we are talking about editors only, e.g. DOCX editor, etc, and their editing capabilities. Document management must be developed by integrator when “online” version of editor is used (Docs, Docs Cloud).
Hope it makes sense.
Thanks. Yes I was only referring to actual writing and editing features, not anything related to document management.
Then I guess I have answered that question. If you do not have any other questions, then I suppose topic can be closed.
Yes, but before you do that, what does DMS stand for?
Also, am I correct that Document Server requires the user to install their own server in order to use that version of OnlyOffice (i.e., it’s intended for technically advanced users)?
Thanks.
DMS - Document Management System, or simply a storage.
Technically, yes, this is correct. But there is also a list of ready-to-go solutions, i.e. connectors, for some popular DMS platforms, please see it here:
You can do some test with integrated test example too, but this is just to check out how editors work. The integration of editors into your own app must be developed separately.
Thanks, what’s an example of a “Document Management System”?
I’m not sure what exactly that label refers to. Is the Mac ‘Finder’ a DMS?
Can the DMS that’s native to Desktop Editors be enhanced by any of those plugins?
Please see:
Finder is not a DMS, it cannon be enhanced.
