ONLYOFFICE integrates Jitsi: make calls right from editors

About Jitsi

Jitsi is an open-source video and audio conferencing service, which allows you to easily organize secure online meetings. Jitsi is compatible with WebRTC, the open standard for Web communication. The service grew from a student project by Emil Ivov at the University of Strasbourg in 2003.

Why Jitsi

Due to numerous requests from users, the developers of ONLYOFFICE Docs decided to add tools for conferencing in the editors. And the choice was Jitsi. The service is completely open-source and totally free, offers encrypted communication, and lots of useful features (ability to lock a room with a password, auto-view the active speaker and so on).

Within ONLYOFFICE Docs, the conferencing tool lets users:

  • quickly meet-up with your colleagues to briefly discuss the document;
  • organize audio and video meetings for a bigger amount of teammates;
  • hold webinars and show others the results of your work;
  • stream audio and video content from your pc.

How to use the plugin

The plugin integrates Jitsi service in ONLYOFFICE Docs, so you don’t need to leave the editor and launch any additional applications.

  1. Open the Plugins tab and click on Jitsi.
  2. Press the “Start” button to create Jitsi iframe.
  3. Then insert your nickname and let the browser use your camera and microphone.
  4. If you want to finish a call, just press the “Stop” button.

This is really nice!

In addition it would be nice to use nextcloud-talk in a similar way if OnlyOffice is integrated in a nextcloud. At the moment this only works with a workaround if booth participants have the right to share: Open the sidebar via “edit rights” in top-bar of OO and switch to the “chat” tab in nextcloud sidebar.

I guess it would be very simple to add a button to open the sidebar with chat tab directly even for users without the right to reshare. Any plans on that`?

Hello @socialize.IT
Do I understand you right that you mean Talk app? https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/spreed

Yes, exactly.
I would like to communcate this way:

This is possible via the workaround of opening the “edit rights” and change to the “chat”. But only for participants that have the right to edit the “edit rights” of the document. I would like a button/plugin to open the nextcloud sidebar directly with the “chat” tab for every participant.

Thank you for your idea. We need some time to discuss it internally. Also please post your idea on GitHub here: https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/onlyoffice-nextcloud
