About Mistral AI
Mistral AI is an artificial intelligence startup based in France. It’s known for its open-source large language models, trained on a massive volume of text data. Like any other popular AI models, they can be used for all kinds of natural language processing tasks.
Since its establishment in 2023, Mistral AI has quickly become one of the world’s leading generative AI providers, offering a wide variety of general-purpose and specialized models that can be deployed on-premises or accessed in the cloud.
In this guide, we will explain how to use Mistral AI models in the ONLYOFFICE suite via a special plugin. Let’s dive into it!
Step 1: Install the AI plugin
You can skip this step if you already know how the AI plugin works in ONLYOFFICE and have it installed. However, if you have no experience in working with artificial intelligence in our editors, you need to install the AI plugin first, which is quite simple and straightforward.
Launch any ONLYOFFICE editor and access the Plugins tab. Open the Plugin Manager and find the AI plugin. Click the Install button.
After that, you should activate the AI plugin. To do so, click Background plugins on the Plugins tab. Now you need to enable the corresponding switcher for the AI plugin. If done correctly, you will see a new AI tab on the top toolbar.

Step 2: Add a Mistral AI model
To get started with Mistral AI in ONLYOFFICE, you need to have a valid API key that you can generate in your Mistral account.
When you have one, go to the AI tab and click Settings. You will see the AI configuration window. This window allows you to choose various AI models for different tasks, such as translation and text analysis.
What you need to do now is to click the Edit AI models option in the lower right corner. This option lets you add new AI models. To add a new one, click Add.
After that, you will access the Add AI model menu. In this menu, select Mistral in the list of default AI providers, which also includes OpenAI, Together AI and Anthropic.
After selecting Mistral, you need to enter your API key in the corresponding field and click the Update models list button.
Now you can choose one of the available Mistral models depending on your subscription plan and the tasks you are going to perform with the AI assistant. For example, Codestral models are designed for effortless coding, and Pixtral models offer image understanding capabilities in addition to text. Learn more on the Mistral website.
Choose the required model and click OK.
Step 3: Configure the use of the Mistral model
Now that you have successfully added a Mistral AI model, it’s time to define the tasks you are going to perform with this model. Get back to the AI tab and open the Settings menu. In this menu, you can decide which models will be used for various tasks. This is very useful since you can add various Mistral models and even models from other AI providers.
The current version of the AI plugin has four options:
- Ask AI is used to hold conversations with the chatbot;
- Summarization is used when you need to summarize a large text in a few sentences;
- Translation allows you to translate text from one language to another;
- Text analysis is used to analyse words and explore their meaning.
Choose the desired models for each option. That’s it. The configuration process is over, and your Mistral AI assistant is ready for work.
Use Mistral AI to get your work done
Now that your AI assistant is properly configured, you can use it when working on your office documents. To access the AI assistant, you can use the options on the AI tab or the context menu if you select some text and right-click with your mouse.
Using Mistral AI in ONLYOFFICE, you can do different things:
- Get precise answers to your questions;
- Make various requests to the chatbot;
- Quickly find information;
- Analyse words and sentences;
- Generate texts, images and keywords;
- Summarize and translate texts;
