Since we need to update the key on every edit and save. After the key is updated, we also lose our comments and chats along with the old key. Is there any way to keep them and just update the key?

Could you please provide us with step-by-step issue scenario (you can make screenshots)? Chat feature persists only during editing session. So, you will lose chat message when document.key is updated.
But comments should be available. I believe something goes wrong in your scenario.
