From November 25 to December 13, the eyes of millions of chess enthusiasts and professional players will be focused on the World Chess Championship 2024. Taking place in Singapore, this historic event will feature a match between Ding Liren from China, the reigning world champion, and Gukesh Dommaraju from India, the current challenger. FIDE World Chess Championship 2024: an overview
The FIDE World Chess Championship is the most popular and important global chess event, which attracts a lot of attention. It’s held every two years featuring a match between the defending world champion and the challenger who are chosen through a qualification process.
The history of the World Chess Championship dates back to 1886 when Wilhelm Steinitz became the first official world champion by defeating Johannes Zukertort. Since then there have been 17 world champions from different countries, and the current title belongs to Ding Liren from China, who became the 17th classical world champion after defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi, a grandmaster from Russia, in 2023.

Interestingly, 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju is the youngest challenger in chess history.

The total prize fund of $2.5 million will be split between the 2024 winner and his opponent based on game outcomes.
FIDE World Chess Championship 2024: regulations
At the event, there will be 14 classical games. The player who scores 7.5 points or more gets the world chess champion title, and no further games are played in this case. Points are awarded as follows:
- Win: 1 point
- Draw: 0.5 points for each player
- Loss: 0 points.
If the total score is equal after all 14 games, there will be a tie-break to decide the winner. For more detailed regulations, take a look at the official FIDE website.

The official schedule includes 14 game days with rest days, from November 25 to December 13. If they are not enough to decide the 2024 champion, a tie-break will take place on December 13, and the Closing ceremony will be held on December 14.
