Allow Local File Sync To Cloud

Quick suggestion:

I like the OnlyOffice cloud capability. It would also be super to be able to sync local files to the OO cloud. This would allow files to be edited with OO online but also then synced with the local file on a computer (and vice versa).

Users would then be able to retain local control of their file(s) but also access file in the cloud if away from the computer or access the local file on their computer if the internet is not available at the time to get on the cloud. This also gives users a local (or cloud) backup of sorts.

Hello @sporto
Please describe the scenario as detailed as possible. What cloud service do you use? And what desktop app are you using on your local computer?

Not the original poster, but this is a benefit I would also love, and know how positively it would impact a large potential user base. If it currently exists in OnlyOffice, Iā€™m unable to find it. What I would like is something that would allow for changes in the cloud file (e.g. saved on the username.onlyoffice.com cloud) to sync to the offline copy saved on my desktop (written in or opened with the OnlyOffice program), or for the changes on my desktop/locally saved file to sync to the username.onlyoffice.com cloud. Similar to MSOneDriveā€™s sync-and-upload element. This could be manual or automated, but I know a number of people (mostly authors and students) who write both at home on a desktop device as well as on the go (e.g. mobile phone, tablets) where this feature would be a major value-add for OnlyOffice over other programs (e.g. Word, which does this with OneDrive).

As a brand new user of OnlyOffice, this may exist already and I just donā€™t know where to find it.

Dear @maitreyi and @sporto
Right now thereā€™s possibility to edit files stored on the DocSpace Cloud using the desktop app. To achieve this behavior you need to log in to your portal through Desktop app on the ā€˜Connect to Cloudā€™ page. Hereā€™s video file with my test:

Will it meet your expectations? Or do you need this described feature?

allow for changes in the cloud file (e.g. saved on the username.onlyoffice.com cloud) to sync to the offline copy saved on my desktop

Hello @Alexandre,

Please describe the scenario as detailed as possible. What cloud service do you use? And what desktop app are you using on your local computer?

I am using the free OnlyOffice provided could service (DocSpace: .onlyoffice.com). The desktop app Iā€™m using is ONLYOFFICE Docs v.8.3.0.94.

To answer your next post (ā€œedit files stored on the DocSpace Cloud using the desktop appā€). That is not exactly what I have in mind.

Your example would require an internet connection and to be using the cloud through the desktop app. What I am suggesting is that I have a file (document/spreadsheet etc.) that is physically saved on my computer that is set to sync to the DocSpace cloud:
If there is no internet connection and Iā€™m on my computer, I could edit the document and next time I have internet access the changes would then sync with the cloud and update the document stored in the cloud.
AND
If Iā€™m away from my computer but do have internet access on another computer, I would access the document (via DocSpace) and change it. Then the next time I turn on my computer and access the internet with it, the document on the computer would sync with the cloud and it (computer file) would be updated with the changes I had made to the cloud file.

Also think this is also @maitreyiā€™s intention and they provide the example of MSOneDrive sync .

I will note however, that this may have to be a separate feature from collaboration: Having an offline copy that may not immediately sync to the cloud would likely lead to collaboration issues (e.g. my first example of no internet connection and my changes later sync with the cloud once I regain internet access) as other collaborators would not see my changes until later and things would get confusing. Maybe MSOneDrive has a solution for this that @maitreyi could shed light on.

Dear @sporto and @maitreyi
Thank you for the provided details. We need some time to discuss it internally. I will update this thread as soon as possible.

This is a feature I would very, very much like to see!

Here is a scenario that this would help with:
Where I live there are frequent power outages. During a power outage maintaining Internet connection is complicated (mobile tethering). Say, Iā€™m editing a document online and I have it set to sync to a local copy. When the power goes out, I want to be able to switch to the local copy and continue to edit. Itā€™s possible that I might have lost a few edits that were done to the cloud version, but have not yet been sent to the local version. When that happens, I want to deal with it as if there were competing edits from different editors. When the Internet connection comes back, I want the local edits to propagate to the cloud version. Some minor merges might be necessary, due to edits that had not been synced to the local copy and that I then redid locally and that now conflict with the edits that had been done on the cloud version.

Hello @mszsk
Understood, we need some time to take a closer look at it. I will update this thread shortly.

We have added the enhancement described in this thread to internal tracksystem. We have started working on it. Thank you all for your idea!
